In a heated exchange that required the intervention of the judge, Spacey was asked about allegations he had grabbed a man backstage at a charity event in a theater. “Absolute bollocks!” Spacey replied to titters from the gallery in the packed courtroom. “Yes, because that’s exactly where you did grab him,” Prosecutor Christine Agnew snapped back. “Really?" Spacey said as he looked up at Justice Mark Wall. "Did he accuse me of grabbing his bollocks?” Someone said, “Yes,” and Wall told him to answer the question. “I did not," Spacey said. Spacey was in the witness box for a second day in Southwark Crown Court, his final chance to convince jurors that he neve...

Microsoft cleared major hurdles to its plan to buy videogame maker Activision Blizzard on Tuesday, after a US judge gave a thumbs-up to the $69 billion deal and a British regulator suggested it could reconsider its opposition. Activision shares surged 10% on the day, as the US and Britain have been the two countries opposed to what would be Microsoft's biggest deal ever and the largest transaction in the videogame industry's history. Microsoft shares rose 64 cents to $332.47. US District Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley in San Francisco rejected the Biden administration's contention that the deal would hurt consumers by giving Xbox game console-maker Microsoft exclusive access to games including the best-selling "Call of Duty." Shortly after the US  judge 's order, Britain's Com Pet ition and Markets Authority (CMA) said it was prepared to consider Microsoft's proposals to resolve antitrust concerns in the ...

NEW YORK: Meta Platforms (META.O) on Wednesday launched a direct challenge to Twitter with Threads, garnering million s of users in hours as it sought to take advantage of its rival's much-weakened state after a series of chaotic decisions from owner Elon Musk. Those quick to join the new platform included celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez as well as prominent politicians such as Democratic US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. "Let's do this. Welcome to Threads," Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote in his first post on the app, along with a fire emoji. He said the app logged 10 million sign-ups in seven hours. He also took to Twitter, posting a well-known meme of Spiderman facing off against Spiderman - in a humorous jab at the rivalry with Musk and between the two services. Analysts have said Threads' ties to Instagram might give it a built-in user base and advertising apparatus. That could siphon ad dollars from Twitter at a time wh...

France’s highest court has rejected a request by three groups seeking reparations for slavery in a case that originated on the French Caribbean island of Martinique PARIS -- France’s highest court has rejected a request by three groups seeking reparations for slavery in a case that originated on the French Caribbean island of Martinique. The court’s decision on Wednesday said that no one produced evidence showing they had “suffered individually” any damage from the crimes that their ancestors had been subjected to. One of the lawyers pursuing the case, Alain Manville, called it a “political decision” and said he believed the large amount of money that France would have to pay in reparations was a major consideration for the court. He expressed hope for making the case more global, bringing in “all Afro-descendants” in a move that he believes would lead French judges to see the case differently. “We will succeed in this process,” Manville said. “I don't know when.” Slavery was aboli...
