Man Utd break record for most expensive squad ever built

Image
Manchester United have put together the most expensive squad in History , according to the latest report on European finances. The report takes into account the total cost of the transfer fees paid to sign every player in the squad , but does not include United's expensive shopping spree last summer when Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir joined for around £180m combined. According to UEFA's latest study, even before those expensive new faces were added to the mix United's squad cost them a whopping €1.422bn (£1.21bn). That is the highest total ever recorded, eclipsing the record set by Real Madrid in 2020. Eden Hazard had joined the Spanish giants 12 months earlier for well over £100m, adding to a squad which featured expensive signings like Ferland Mendy, Luka Jovic, Eder Militao and Rodrygo. United have never been scared to splash the cash to bolster their squad. They paid £85.5m to sign Antony in 2022, with the Brazilian becoming their seco

Enzo Fernandez transfer: Agent denies Chelsea exit considered

Image
Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez is set to stay at the club, the player's agent has confirmed amid rumours to the contrary that he is already considering an exit from Stamford Bridge. Fernandez joined Chelsea last January for what was then a British record £108m, moving to west London from Benfica within weeks of winning the 2022 World Cup with Argentina and signing an unfathomably long eight and a half year contract until the summer of 2031. But the 23-year-old, who walked away from the World Cup in Qatar with the award for best young player, has struggled to consistently perform and justify his immense transfer fee. Chelsea have generally struggled throughout that time, sinking into the bottom half of the Premier League . Agent Uriel Perez has, however, denied there are any plans to look for a new team. "The player has no intention of leaving," Perez told AS , directly refuting recent speculation. "The [Chelsea] leaders were very clear with this project. It is a

Bruno Fernandes turned down 'astronomical' Saudi Pro League offer - report

Image
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is reported to have turned down the chance to swap Old Trafford and the Premier League for the Saudi Pro League in January. After a big spending summer saw countless big-name stars head to the oil rich gulf nation to join Cristiano Ronaldo, including Neymar, Karim Benzema and Sadio Mane, the winter transfer window again saw plenty of players linked with a move. Senior United players Casemiro and Raphael Varane were among them, with Fernandes having also emerged as a rumoured Saudi target in the months leading up to January. Portuguese outlet Record has claimed that an " astronomical offer" was presented to the skipper from Al Hilal, one of the Saudi Pro League's 'big four' teams controlled by the country's Public Investment Fund (PIF) – the same PIF that majority owns Newcastle. The proposal was rejected, with Fernandes said to feel that he still has things left to achieve in elite European Football – indeed, he i

3 players Chelsea should have been targeting in January

Image
In January 2023, Chelsea spent the best part of £300m on new signings. In January 2024, they spent nothing. The Blues have big plans for this summer's transfer window - Napoli's Victor Osimhen is likely to be a £100m+ target - but, while saving money for that is important, Chelsea have taken the gamble of not bolstering their squad for the remainder of the season. Cesare Casadei is back from loan but that's not a major boost to a side sitting tenth in the Premier League . Here are three targets Chelsea should have looked at this winter. Callum Wilson Wilson is thought to be available / Marc Atkins/GettyImages Goals have, once again, been hard to come by this season. Chelsea need someone who can score reliably, and while they're looking at someone like Osimhen to fill that void in the summer, Mauricio Pochettino needs someone immediately as well. Al Ittihad's Karim Benzema was touted as a loan target. That would be perfect but was perhaps too good to be true, with r

Chelsea's position in Premier League table without Cole Palmer's goals

Image
Following Chelsea's mass spending spree last summer in which the Blues broke the Premier League transfer record, one man has stood out among their new recruits. Signed for an initial £40m from last season's treble-winners Manchester City, Cole Palmer has adapted quickly to life at Stamford Bridge. Mauricio Pochettino may have admitted that acquiring the 21-year-old wasn't actually his idea, but that hasn't stopped the Argentine leaning heavily on him this term. Palmer has been an integral part of Pochettino's new-look Blues, stepping up with goals and assists in spite of his rather toothless teammates. The Englishman has settled more quickly than any of Chelsea's other summer signings, but the west London club have arguably grown too reliant on his contributions. So, where would Chelsea be without Cole Palmer's goals ? How many goals has Cole Palmer scored in the Premier League? A number of Palmer's strikes have come from the spot / Chris Brunskill/Fant

Potential loan destinations for Karim Benzema in January transfer window - ranked

Image
With a Ballon d'Or, eight league titles, five UEFA Champions Leagues and over 400 goals to his name, Karim Benzema left European Football behind in the summer of 2023. Instead of signing a new deal with Real Madrid, the legendary forward opted to join the Saudi Arabian revolution instead - putting pen to paper on a deal said to be worth £172m-per-year at Al Ittihad. With his Saudi side lingering disappointingly in mid-table however, outlandish reports have now claimed that Benzema could be on his way back to Europe on loan this January. Here are the clubs who should be looking to sign him. 5. Barcelona Is it a possibility? / Eric Alonso/GettyImages Yeah, yeah, yeah, we hear you. There's no way in a million years that Benzema joins Madrid's arch rivals on loan. We know. We get it. The reason Barca are worth mentioning on this list though is that they're probably the club that needs Benzema the most right now. With Robert Lewandowski struggling to get a kick of the ball

Arsenal's expiring contracts: Keep or release?

Image
Arsenal's return to the top table of English football has completely flipped the narrative when it comes to the makeup of the Gunners' squad. Now with dreams of winning the Premier League and battling for European glory, gone are the days of searching for bargains and extending the contracts of popular players. Tough decisions need to be made, and Arsenal have a few to make this summer. Here's a closer look at the players on expiring deals at the Emirates. Jorginho Jorginho's contract has an extension clause / BSR Agency/GettyImages Jorginho's deal expires in the summer but Arsenal do have the option to extend his stay by a further 12 months, and the Gunners would be wise to do so. Having spent so much money last summer, and with expensive transfer targets being lined up for this year, Arsenal may not have a whole lot of financial flexibility when it comes to finding reliable squad help, and so keeping Jorginho feels like a sensible business decision. It's clear
