Nearly 2,000 Amazon workers to walk out after return to office

Image
'Employees need a say in decisions that affect our lives,' an Amazon worker petition said. N early 2,000 Amazon worker s plan to walk out on Wednesday as the company weathers layoffs and a mandate that corporate employees return to the office . "Employees need a say in decisions that affect our lives," said a petition from worker groups Amazon Employees for Climate Justice and Amazon's Remote Advocacy. The employee activism follows a series of layoffs in recent months. In early January, Amazon announced plans to eliminate just over 18,000 roles, including impending layoffs announced in November. In all, the company has slashed 27,000 jobs since last fall. At the outset of this month the company mandated corporate employees return to the office at least three days per week. The employee petition cited the return-to-work policy and Amazon's ongoing climate impact as evidence that company leadership is "taking us in the wrong direction." MORE: Amazo

Lawmakers have one week to pass a debt ceiling bill in Congress before the predicted June 5 "X-date" for default A critical deal to raise the nation's debt ceiling was announced over the weekend, and lawmakers in Washington now face one week to pass the bill in both chambers of Congress before the predicted deadline when default would begin. The U.S. will run out of cash to pay all of its bills in full and on time -- the so-called "X-date" -- as early as June 5, according to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen. MORE: Key questions and takeaways from the debt ceiling deal Despite the breakthrough on an agreement between President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, legislative hurdles remain to get the 99-page debt and spending bill to Biden's desk by next Monday. Mercedes has 'no sense of entitlement' over fight to improve

Image
Toto Wolff says that Mercedes have "no sense of entitlement" as they attempt to return to the front of the Formula 1 pack. The squad will bring updates to the W14 at the upcoming Monaco Grand Prix weekend, having faced struggles with their car during the 2023 F1 season so far. While the aim of this is to close the gap to the team's rivals, Wolff acknowledges that it is simply the "first step" in this mission. "[Monaco] is a unique event but will still provide an opportunity to learn about the upgrades to W14 – but we also need to be careful not to draw too many conclusions from this one event," Wolff explained. "We are introducing the first step in a new development direction." Viewed by others: Mercedes Mercedes warn of 'no miracles' from urgent response to Red Bull

The Pentagon, the headquarters building of the U.S. Department of Defense, is located in Arlington County, Virginia. A Pentagon spokesperson also told ABC News that no explosion had occurred. But throughout the morning, the fake image and misleading caption picked up steam on Twitter. Cyabra, a social analysis firm, analyzed the online conversation and fo

Jean Carroll may, again, come back to haunt him. Carroll's attorneys sought on Monday to amend her initial defamation lawsuit against Trump, filed in 2019, to account for allegedly defamatory statements he made about her after a jury found him liable for battery and defamation in a second lawsuit that the former Elle magazine columnist filed against him last November. There was no immediate response from Trump or his lawyers. Carroll's first suit has been tied up on legal technicalities and, in the new court filing, her lawyers sought a judge's permission to include Trump's words after the May 9 verdict against him.
