Unfortunately for Mavericks fans, the latest example of the Kyrie Irving Effect is on full display in Dallas

This, Dallas Mavericks fans, is the Kyrie Irving Experience. His arrival is not, and was never going, to be about his seductive scoring skill. Or the no-arguments-anywhere uber talent he embodies in a league that runs on basketball greatness. Nor all the glory and greatness one might imagine when combining that scoring skill and that uber talent with the likes of Luka Doncic. It's the losing that for almost six years has defined Irving, his teams, and those organizations that have learned, too late, that what feels alluring and desired from a distance becomes up close a slow-moving, organizational disaster movie.  The crazy thing at this point isn't that this is what Irving does to teams. The crazy thing is that teams, fans, NBA media, and probably at least one GM somewhere eying Irving's possible free agency this summer don't see Irving for what he really is. Talent blinds, like love. And it break...

Timberwolves sale: Alex Rodriguez, Marc Lore complete new $290 million payment, to be majority owners by 2024

Major League Baseball legend Alex Rodriguez and billionaire businessman Marc Lore completed a new $290 million payment towards their purchase of the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday, according to The Athletic. This was the second of three installments before they become majority owners, which is expected to happen in 2024.  When the pair agreed to purchase the Timberwolves from longtime owner Glen Taylor in 2021 for $1.5 billion, they did so under a unique arrangement that called for a multi-year transition process. Under this plan, Taylor, who has owned the Timberwolves since 1994, got a few more years in charge before handing over control, and Rodriguez and Lore got some extra time to learn about the league and bring their finances into order.  Even though Rodriguez and Lore are not yet the majority owner s, they have been involved in all of the major decisions the organization has made in recent years. That ...

Joel Embiid appears to call out Nikola Jokic's defense, questions analytics that 'don't make sense'

Joel Embiid has lost the NBA MVP award to Nikola Jokic two years in a row, but with two weeks remaining in the 2022-23 regular season, his chances at finally winning the coveted award have never been higher. As of Monday morning, he is a minus-225 favorite at Caesars Sports book while Jokic (plus-175) and Giannis Antetokounmpo (plus-325) lag behind. The Philadelphia 76ers still have Game s remaining against Jokic's Denver Nuggets and Antetokounmpo's Milwaukee Bucks, but Embiid is undeniably in pole position as the race nears its conclusion. But that doesn't mean Embiid has gotten over the disappointment of the past few seasons. In a Q&A with The Athletic's Shams Charania, Embiid grumbled about the ways in which he believes the award's criteria changes annually while appearing to take a shot at Jokic. "The criteria does change," Embiid said. "If we want to talk about the last...

NBA Star Power Index: LeBron James is finally breaking down; Damian Lillard concludes record-breaking month

Welcome back to  NBA  Star Power Index: A weekly gauge of the players getting the most buzz around the league. Inclusion on this list isn't necessarily a good thing -- it simply means you're capturing the NBA world's attention. This is also not a ranking. The players listed are in no particular order. This column will run every week throughout the regular season.  ...

NBA Power Rankings: Celtics lead pack at All-Star break; Knicks in top 10; Lakers, Warriors disappoint

The NBA All-Star break isn't just for the players. It's a good time for fans to reset, take a deep breath, and look back at the season which is now three-quarters of the way done, despite our tendency to call it the "halfway" point. The idea of retrospect goes for us too, and we've decided to use this week's Power Rankings to look back at the season as a whole, rather than just the previous week. Major trades stand to shake things up in the home stretch, but a clear hierarchy was established before the break . The Boston Celtics have been the class of the field for the majority of the season, with the Western Conference-leading Denver Nuggets and powerhouse Milwaukee Bucks just a hair behind them. Within striking distance are the Philadelphia 76ers, Cleveland Cavaliers and Memphis Grizzlies, who all put up impressive records before the All-Star break . In terms of surprises, prior to the ...

NBA Power Rankings: Mavericks, Nets move in opposite directions; Bucks stay No. 1, but Celtics, Cavs close

Whoever said "the more things change, the more they stay the same" clearly doesn't watch NBA basketball. The changes brought on by a frenzied period leading up to Thursday's trade deadline have drastically altered the league's landscape, with the Phoenix Suns catapulting to the top of the championship odds by acquiring two-time Finals MVP Kevin Durant from the Brooklyn Nets. We need to pump the brakes, however, when it comes to the Power Rankings, and try not to get suckered into assuming how teams are going to perform once their new players are in the fold. But, even looking at what teams have done on the court, trade deadline moves have already shown their effects. The Dallas Mavericks, for instance, jumped five spots after a couple of wins following the acquisition of point guard Kyrie Irving. The Nets, by contrast, dropped seven spots after parting ways with both Irving and Durant. ...
